Volunteer Opportunities at Ayre Manor
Ordinarily, volunteers brighten our lives... and make our world go round. However, due to COVID-19, only essential visitors are permitted in the facility. For this reason, we are currently not accepting volunteer applications at this time.
In the future, we hope to invite volunteers back to Ayre Manor in the following capacities:
B’Ayre Manor Essentials Shop
- Retail tasks one day a week in our tiny Tuck Shop
- Occassionally shopping for individual residents
- Monday, Wednesday or Friday afternoons from 12:30 – 2:45 pm
Gardening in Complex Care Courtyards
- Watering, weeding and pruning planters and courtyard gardens
- Wednesday mornings, 10am until noon, then lunch together at the Lazy Gecko Restaurant
One-on-One Activities with a Resident
- Reading to a resident
- Writing letters, cards or emails for a resident
- Taking a resident for a walk
- Shopping on behalf of a resident for clothing, toiletries, etc.
- Mending clothing for a resident
Helping Activities' Staff
- Translating between English and first language for residents and their families
- Driving occassionally
- Designing monthly newsletter and calendar on computer and posting it to website
Small Group Activities
- Leading group discussions
- Reading to a small group
- Taking residents for group walks
- Assisting or leading, sharing and teaching arts, crafts and hobbies
- Assisting or leading bowling, bingo and games nights
- Assisting with morning coffee or afternoon tea
- Assisting or leading musical activities, or performing music
Event Planning & Coordination
- Assisting or leading a committee to help staff and residents coordinate large events or occasional celebrations
- Decorating, setup and cleanup
- MC'ing, music, etc.
Volunteer Coordination
- Recruiting and training volunteers
- Helping produce monthly newsletters and activities calendars
- Communicating with other volunteers
- Supporting campus morale
Ayre Manor Board Membership
- Ayre Manor is a campus of care owned and operated by the local non-profit society Sooke Elderly Citizens' Housing Society
- Board members serve 3-year terms
- Meetings are once per month
- AGM (Annual General Meeting) is in September
